Long Range sensors are a plot device used in every Star Trek series, usually so that a ship, or anything else that is being chased cannot be tracked. Apparently, they are disabled by every single freaking thing in space (i.e. Plasma storm, plasma cannons, subspace anomaly, space dust, a woman singing opera, a person farting within 50 meters of the array, etc...).
